    Helena J18

    Hi,
Today, on July 30, this is the latest update on Helena’s illness.
Helena has now been in hospital for 18 days of which she has spent 6 in intensive care.
I have spoken with the doctor who cares for Helena: he told me that a scan has shown that the digestive infection is still not under control. They will do some more tests to try to determine the type of bacteria that are responsible for the infection. Only one (C.difficile) was identified some time back but it is also still there. The doctors are trying out different antibiotics but there are so many bacteria in the body that they are just hoping that they will hit on the right one. The doctor has described Helena’s condition as mediocre but stable. She has again been given a light sedation and she seems more peaceful. This is a very gruelling experience. We sit in that hospital room surrounded by monitors and with the help of the nurses who help us to read them, we cling to the data that seems encouraging. But what the doctor has told me has reminded me that it will be an uphill struggle.
I feel as if I were walking along a sheer cliff, but as a friend told me, we should concentrate on the word “stable” in the doctor’s diagnosis.
Heartfelt thanks for your enduring support,
    Eric

    Eric
