hello,

i\'m writing a novel taking part in sweden (well, part of the novel), and i need to know how long is the period parents stay away from work in sweden after their child was born. thanks so much in advance

It depends on how much less money than usual the family decide they can manage on. You have a certain amounts of paid days. But you can decide to use less than 7 days a week and thus stretch the leave from work. Until the child is 18 months you have the right to be home full time without loosing your work. The children are not allowed to start the public day care until they have turned 1 year. So an answer to your question is that most parents stay at home between 12 and 18 months. I guess that 15 months is a very common time period. The parents decide how they want to divide the parent leave, except for two months that belong to each parent individually. If one (the dad) parent chooses not to use his individual time the family looses those paid days.

Hope my short summary of a complex social security system makes any sense.
